Friday the 13th everything you need to know.

Just like crossing a path with a black cat or breaking a mirror, many people can not let go of the idea of bad luck happening to them. There is no exact date when the negative superstitions around the number 13 began but here are some minor explanations.

Fear of the number 13 has even earned a psychological term: triskaidekaphobia.

Christians explanation.

Many believe the story from the Bible. 13 guests attended the Last Supper. Jesus and his 12 apostles (including the one, who betrayed him – Judas). The very next day, was the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. The seating arrangement at this biblical event has given rise to a longstanding Christian superstition. Having 13 guests at a table was considered a bad omen, predicting a death.

The Thirteen Club

In the late 19th century has Captain William Fowler decided to remove a stigma surrounding the feared number 13. His aim was to take a closer look especially on the rule about the 13 guests at the table. He established the Thirteen Club.

Club dined regularly on the 13th day of the month in room 13 of the Knickerbocker Cottage their 13-course dinners. Between the members were also Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland, and Theodore Roosevelt (former U.S. presidents).

Popculture and Friday the 13th

Thomas William Lawson has written a novel Friday, the Thirteenth. The story, which revolves around a New York City stockbroker, who plays on superstitions about the date to create chaos on Wall Street and kill on the market. 

Friday the 13th, a horror movie released in 190 introduced the world to a hockey mask-wearing killer named Jason. We can safely say this is the best-known example of the famous superstition. The movie has developed novellas, comic books, video games, merchandise and many more were created

And of course a lot of memes have been created.

13 October 1307 – hundreds of the Knights Templar were arrested (many later executed)

13 November 1970 – cyclone killed over 300 000 people in Bangladesh
13 September 1996 – Tupas Shakur has died
13 Januar, 2012 – Costa Concordia, cruise ship crash off the coast in Italy and killed 30 people
